Getting started

Six steps from a PDF to reading it your way.

Install the app

Download Dunesies Book from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.

Add a book

Tap Add Book and choose one or more PDFs from the Files app. Select several at once to import them together.

Start reading while it loads

The library shows each book’s page progress as it imports. Open it at any time and read the pages that are already done.

Pick a reading mode

Choose Chunks, Word by Word or Voice from the bar at the bottom of the reader. Each book remembers its mode.

Set your pace

Change the chunk size, the words per minute or the voice speed until it feels right.

Pick up where you left off

Your place is saved as you read. Continue Reading in the library takes you straight back.

Imports keep going. They continue in the background, and if Dunesies Book is closed, they resume from the last page they read.

Reading modes

Three ways through the same book. Switch at any time and your place follows you.

Chunks

The book in short passages, one card at a time. Swipe up for the next. Small, medium and large chunks hold about 150, 300 and 500 characters.

Word by Word

One word at a time in the center of the screen, from 60 to 600 words per minute. It starts at 200, and the screen stays on while it plays.

Voice

The book read aloud by the voices built into iOS, with the current words highlighted. Choose a male or female voice and a speed from 0.5x to 2x.

Voice keeps reading when you leave the app. Lock your phone or switch apps and it carries on, with play and pause on the lock screen. It pauses for calls and when headphones are unplugged.

Importing books

Getting every word of a PDF right, including scanned ones.

Text based PDFs The PDF’s own text is usedOnly after sample pages are checked against text recognition, since some PDFs carry broken text that silently drops letters.
Scanned pages Read with on-device text recognitionEnglish scans use a dedicated recognition model built into the app. Other languages use Apple’s text recognition.
Several at once Up to two books import togetherAny further books wait their turn and start automatically.
Interrupted imports Resume from the last pageProgress is saved page by page, so closing the app loses nothing.
Check how a book was read. Book Info shows the page count, how many pages needed text recognition, and any pages without readable text.

Each book shows how far you have read, and Continue Reading opens the last one.

Your own cover

Change a book’s cover with a photo you choose. Dunesies Book only sees that one photo.

Title and author

Rename a book or change its author when the PDF gets them wrong.

Remove a book

Delete a book to remove its text and cover from your device.

There is no sign up, no analytics and no advertising.

Reading never needs a connection, so it works the same on a plane as at home.
